Yeah I remember the story and don't recall which book it was either but 
think it was probably, "Surely You're Joking Mr. Feynman". That's the one he 
put most of his really amusing experiences in.

he gets into a long list of reasons about why manhole covers are round,
and none of them is the "correct" answer ("so it won't fall in"). I
remember it being an especially enjoyable part of the book  (although I
don't remember what book it was).
