Dann,

Like you, I can't yet figure out why the threads on this huge vise are
stuck. Yesterday evening with my 21 year old son (the human cheater bar)
helping me we were able to with the utmost difficulty and by repeatedly
parking the Subaru on the vise jaws to keep it from moving unscrew the male
threaded part so that now there are several inches of beautiful rust free
shiny threads showing. It did get slightly looser although I can still not
unscrew it at all by myself unless its set up so that I can jump on the
cheater bar while the Subaru is parked on the vise. I'm happy that I'm
still able to move this morning but I do have a significant amount of back
tension and stiffness. I asked my son if he could tell that he'd been doing
all that pulling and lifting and he thought for a moment and said that yes
he could because his shorts were still dirty.

The casted female cone part of the threads on this vise is not stuck in the
jaws, but moves in and out freely. I'll just have to wait till we get it
apart and inspect and clean the cone threads to hopefully find out why it is
so stiff. I don't think it is a case of the cone being flipped half a turn
in the fixed jaw as it has that projection that fits into the slot on the
fixed jaw to keep the cone from rotating when you turn the male part, but
I'll definitely look into that further when we get it apart all the way.

Did you have to do anything to the male threads? I'm thinking that if I
can't get the screw to work smoothly I may try sanding a little off the
threads as I can't think of anything else to do. At least this beautiful
vise is keeping my mind off all the real problems that I normally worry
about. What a treat.

Thanks, Jeff
