First  if you are going solar make sure you have enough batteries for  
storage and plenty of solar panels.  You might also want to  put in a  wind 
generator too  if the area that you live in get any  type of  steady winds. If you are 
going to get completely off of the grid then   think  about getting a back up 
generator. Have plenty  of insulation  through out the house too.
