I have made many glass top tables. I always use 3/4" regular plate with a 
pencil edge if the top is larger than the base. Even on small accent tables 
with an inset top, I use 1/2" plate with a polished edge.
Have not had a broken one yet. Some folks use 1/4" plate, I wouldn't trust 
that. Tempered glass has to be made to dimension.
Meaning that unless you have a very long turn around time, you will have to 
order the tempered glass when you begin to make the table and hope that it 
fits (if it is an inset glass) I have the advantage of having one of the 
largest glass companies in the country in the next town. Dependable Glass
