That's useful for plate.
For long stock I use 1"x1"x3 feet = 10 pounds.
And remember that round stock is ~3/4 the weight of the corresponding square, so 1"diax3 feet = ~7.5 lbs.
If you get into odd shapes, remeber that a wedge is half the weight of the corresponding rectangle (two wedges, so to speak), and that a cone or pyramid is 1/3 the weight of the corresponding rectangular prism. (By corresponding, I mean having the same dimentions, before the tapering is done.) Truncated wedges, cones and pyramids can be calculated as the difference between the full shape and what's "missing."

You can get fairly close (with a little math) by taking 12"x12"x1/4" as
10 pounds. An easy one to remember when you're at the scrapyard.
