So: I measured down 22.41% of the length (accurate to 1/32") of my 15"
x 1" dia brass tube, bored a 5/64" hole through, inserted a piece of
1/16" bare steel welding wire so's to suspend the tube vertically.
It rings with a nice, pure, enduring tone, especially if struck near
the lower end. The slightest touch at the point close to the end
where I was previously suspending it damps the note immediately. Hah!
Tried laying a piece of 2" dia copper pipe about 5' long flat,
supported on wires at both the 22.42% and the 13.21% points (accurate
to 1/4") and got two different tones, one very low and spooky, but not
as enduring as with the brass.
Builder's chalk powder sifted onto the copper didn't adhere well
enough to visualize the nodes but it showed promise if only the
technique can be improved a bit over late-night ad hoccery.
I'm not sure how much help that will be for the original question
about triangle bells but thank you all very much for the pointers and
discussion.
