Is the work laid on top of the chips or buried?
If it's buried as in a coal/charcoal forge I can see advantages.
If on the other hand it's just laid on top of the chips the only advantage I
see is complete consumption of the oxy. The disadvantages I see being wasted
fuel heating a bunch of ceramic chips instead of the steel.
To avoid scaling I just run my burner a little rich, even melted steel
laying in the bottom doesn't scale till I turn it off and air gets in.
