My five year son Niko asked for a present recently that I couldn't refuse.
He has a little anvil (20 lbs) in the shop and a small ballpeen that he uses to
hit metal. He came to me one morning and with a very serious look, asked me if
I
would make something for him in the shop.
I said "What do you want me to make"? He held up his hands to show me How big
they were and said "I want a double faced rounding hammer like yours, but with
a smaller handle. My ballpeen is too big" I was grinning from ear to ear
when I told my wife about it. I went to Home Depot and picked up one of those
hammers/mallets that has iron core and plastic head. I poped the plastic heads
off and ground the stumps down, flatting one and rounding the other. I also
shaved and sanded the handle down to his size.
When he came in the shop the other day, I gave him his hammer and he started
right in dishing a piece of brass sheet to make a bowl for his sister after
about 10 minutes he asked where the hook was. I said "What hooK"? ..He
pointed at my anvil stump with the hammer around it and said I need a hook to
hang my hammer on my stump!" It was time to go into dinner so I said that we
would make it togther next time.
I'll post a picture of him smithing on my website the next time we go into the
shop :)

Isn't sanity really just a one trick pony, anyway? I mean, all you get is one
trick, rational thinking! But when you're good and crazy
ooh hoo hoo hoo
the
sky's the limit!
