I thought of this too, but the SS bowls I got are very thin. Actually
went out and got a couple 8"-ers for a ball-joint-adjustable flue I
tried out one time for a coal forge. (It worked, but not well enough to
be worth the trouble.)

I can hear the Thunder and Lightening cracking, but a few
years back, we bought a bunch of 8 inch stainless steel
bowls at Shopko that would be hemispheres if I banged the
small flattened area of the bottom back into round, and
did like wise, with the rolled lip ... it would be pretty
much the hemisphere you are looking for.

Mostly we use them for popcorn bowls, but I took notice of
other bowls just like them used as wash / shaving basins
at a Mountain man Rendez Vous ..in a blacksmiths iron wash
stand. Seems to me that I remember that some clever
smiths have a way of "staining" stainless steel to make
it look like carbon steel.
