[TheForge] 8" hemispheres

Don,

Unfortunately, Maegan Crowley just moved to Colorado. She had a
massive press in her shop that could possibly have been used to mash out
such hemispheres in one heat. If she didn't move it with her ($$$!)
then it's still at Peters Valley...

Tom Ryan (Brookly area) also has an enormous press. I don't know
whether it's suitable for this sort of thing, but you might check with
him.

In either case, you'd need to create appropriate tooling, but that
might not really be so hard to do.

Have you considered welding the edges of a couple of disks together and
inflating them, hot, like Elizabeth Brim demonstrates? It's pretty
low-tech and I'll bet it would give you most of the shaping you need,
even though you might have to finish it off by hand.

I fear you are exactly right, frosty. It appears my expectations
regarding a
rapid and inexpensive solution to getting these bowls were too high. I
will
continue to pursue a pressing or spinning process, however. Maybe I can
find a
metalspinner who already has an 8" mandrel. By the way, regarding the

metalspinning site you recommended...do you have to be a Yahoo user to
get on it?
Everywhere I went it looked like I had to sign up for Yahoo.

Kindest thanks
