What I have heard is that the individual sends the check, gets the goods,
and the check ends up being on a foreign bank and winds up being no good by
the time it gets posted.  Same thing as taking a 2 party check.  The one
holding the check is the one who looses.

A friend of mine, not on theforge, is trying to sell a nice drophammer for  
$2000 and other equipment. He advertises on e-bay. He has got approximately
