Pete,
He got the plate from Stephen Pryor. Check the web site stevescutlery.com.
They range from $20 to $30 depending on size.
My son epoxied the plate on, but almost any adheasive works since the plate
doesn't get hot.
The plates last just about forever and the reduced friction makes your belts
last longer. He is on his second plate because the first one got scratched
while useing a 36 grit. So that one is just used for the initial rough
grinding and the new one is used for the finer grits. 3 years and it is
still flat and smooth. Steel backing plates would show ware after 6 to 8
months. My son only does flat ground knives so the backing plate has seen a
lot of use.
PS: He got the KMG grinder through Koval Knives, just in case anyone was
interested.

Bob;
That sounds like a good idea. I glued a graphite fabric surface on the
steel backing plate on the big one I built and it's long since worn
away mostly...just enough left to prevent the plate from being flat.
Where is the ceramic plate available? What sort of ceramic? Is it
gawdawful expensive? How does it mount? and questions like that?
