So why not use steel banding? They sell it in rolls for people who use it for 
its intended purpose- I imagine you can buy a roll like anyone else- or, 
depending how much you need, scrounge some from a place that receives banded 
packages. That's what I did when I needed some to make a steel bow to wrap up 
Rob's forge for his birthday ;-)
