Roger,
I don't think it is possible to quiet a blown forge to the decibel level of
an atmospheric forge. I used Murph's atmospheric forge in a demo a
few months ago and it was great. I could hear questions and they could hear
answers. I used a blown forge in a demo last month and it sounded like an
F-14 - couldn't hear it thunder. My blown forge is noisy but efficient - I
may try your muffler idea and see if there is any difference

Andy,
Did you build any special burner end where your pipe enters your forge? If
so
what, if not is your forge LOUD?
I built a burner end for mine based on a Japh Howard design. Basically it
is
'The Rosebud Concept' the volume of air that can pass thru a 1 & 1/4" pipe.
Divide that up into individual holes the size of straws, basically a big
rosebud. It is truly effective and much much quieter. A bit of work to go
thru the process involving a 1&1/4 to 3 bell, some beeswax in the bottom of
the bell to hold the straws in place while the castable refractory sets up,
a
template pattern to hold them in place on top but it is worth the trouble.
mine has been up and running with this design about 7 years.
