Dan,
I think the same principal would apply as in fish plating a weld on a frame
rail- <> as opposed to a butt weld. The BS cookbook shows the diamonds in
the same plane as the punched piece.

since no metal is lost,
will it make a difference in strength if the hole is square to the side
