How about:
The squared hole has two points of stress risers, while the diamond has only
one.
The tips of the diamond more closely match the slit hole ,whereas the
squared hole
will have to be heavily upset or have the little V's at the ends.
I still contend, without stretching, the side material will be the same
thickness.
