The original reason was very practical. Regular bricks are 1/3 to 1/2 the 
cost of pavers, and this was the cheapest way to do it. When I put my shop 
in there was a lot of residential building going on, so I went around and 
got all the left over bricks from the builders around the neighborhood. I 
got about half of the needed bricks that way so I needed about $250 worth 
of additional bricks. All pavers would have run over $800 and concrete over 
$1k...  It was a no brainer

Later on it became apparent that the holes allows me to spike won my power 
hammer and treadle hammer.

It also became homes to doodle bugs (ant lions)  who keep most of the 6 and 
8 legged critters cleared out.
