Alix:  I don't have a schematic for the gears, but I have a champion 400 on 
a portable rivet forge.  The gear faces are often bronze and the large gear 
turns a pair of smaller gears that rotate the fan.  There is a separate 
spindle for each gear.  You can remove rust and repaint with rust oleum on 
the outside.  Inside the casing, at the bottom, is a sump for lubricant.  I 
would recommend filling  the sump with Marvel Mystery Oil, if you can get 
it.  Try an auto parts store.
