Ammonia and water is ineffective. Ammonia will encourage animals to use a
particular area as a urinal, a good way in fact to "toilet" train them. Give
the litter box a squirt of dilute ammonia to train the kitten to use it, for
example.

Use white vinegar and water, 1:1. Not only to dogs and cats really dislike
being squirted with vinegar, a 1:1 dilution won't hurt them where ammonia
can. Vinegar will also neutralize the natural ammonia pet stains have and
help discourage repeat acts.
