Coming into this discussion  late, Kevin. But you might want to check out 
Marv Klotz's page.

resource. Among (many) other things, a program called 
<http://www.geocities.com/mklotz.geo/change.zip>CHANGE.ZIP  lets you 
calculate change gears for threading. Can be  set up for the particulars of 
your machine.
