Yeah.  Probably isn't doable in every case but if you come up with an
odd space at the end (or at several ends), do something unique at each
end.  Contrasts with the uniformity of regular pickets without
interfering with their rhythm.

You obviously didn't charge enough.  They had enough money left for a
tape measure. :-)

Some visual effects you can only achieve by getting all the
measurement Just Right.  I hate getting measurements Just Right. 
Often enough, you can get the visual effect you want by looking at it,
tweaking, modeling etc.  And that's what's important[1]: what the
finished piece tells the eye, not what it tells the tape measure.


[1] Yeah, yeah, okay: given that structural, safety, regulatory
requirements etc. are met first.
