If the Brass and steel come in contact you will have bimetallic corrosion.
I would use stainless as the substrate metal and paint it for color if desired. Otherwise brass backing plate with cut outs in stainless would be very distinctive.
It is an interesting question. I have always thought about having my own grave marker in stainless. A little to morbid to make it now and save it for the occasion.......
