The second worst raft of shit I got for a smartass comment at work was I 
invited a guy out to join our team for drinks( alcohol implied but not 
mandatory).  He replied he didn't drink, as his best friend was killed 
by a drunk driver as a young man.  To which I responded " I am really 
sorry to hear that, I certainly hope it wasn't anybody I killed"     My 
sense of humour ( or lack of it)  get me in trouble often.
