[TheForge] cast iron welding

Ralph,
The rod I've used is just called "cast iron rod". It's square, fairly
rough-finished and bare (no flux). I'm pretty sure that the flux I used
with good success was a Peterson's brand...I can check the specifics if you
need them. Preheat to 400 F., weld, post-heat, peen lightly, cool slowly.
Cast iron is a bit different than gas welding steel, the puddle is much more
sluggish (the flux helps this, but doesn't completely cure it)- I think that
I read somewhere that it has to do with the oxides melting at a higher temp
than in steel(?) I've also had good results with arc welding with Ni rod -
and unless a color match is needed, that's my preferred approach. I've
welded cast with TIG as well, using both SS (ER-310) and one of the Ni rods
(Monel...?).

John, What is the cast rod called for torch welding? is there a name
or alloy to it?

I wanted to experiment with the Tig as well. What rods will work
with the Tig welder on cast iron? anyone have any good input on this?
