[TheForge] cast iron welding

Larry, this is interesting as I'd always thought that mig wouldn't
work on cast until last month.
I was going over mig welding process with a junk yard metal sculptor
and we did some experimenting. I took a cast iron stove door and welded test
samples to it with the mig welder using:
1)stainless wire
2)hard wire
3dual shield
Then brazed on a similar sample
and then Tig welded another sample to the door with a stainless rod.
I found the braze broke first on destructive testing, the hardwire
after that, then the rest were about the same...........I had to pry the
sample back and forth until it pulled half the cast door apart to get it
off.
I was rather impressed with the ability of mig to hold cast as
well - but it certainly worked well.
I used preheat and post heat as well..........there were tension
snapping noises as it cooled, but it didn't come apart, and was really hard
to remove the samples.
We came to the conclusion that it was alright to do for sculptural
work as long as something was not structural in supporting the piece or in
high winds in acting like a sail.
I didn't even try the nickle rods with the arc welder, as I know the
results of those.
Ralph
