Roger,

I'm having a little trouble envisioning what you mean. Is this a
vertical or a horizontal bolt?

I'm guessing that the idea you like for roundstock requires the whole
bolt to rotate, so it probably is a hasp-like thing - a tab with a slot
on the round bolt, and a stationary eye on the backplate. To get the
slot over the eye you have to rotate the bolt on its axis.

That, of course, does not translate directly to a rectangular-X-section
bolt. But why not put an "eye" on the bolt itself and have a regular
hinged hasp that comes down onto this eye, when it is in position. This
could be as ornamental as you like.

Or, simply have an eye on the bolt and an eye on the backplate. When
the two eyes align, you can snap a padlock thorugh them both.

Hope this helps.

I will soon be building a pair of slide bolts, each 36 inches long. I
have been working on some drawings, working out design and
measurements. I have yet to come up with a system I like for
incorporating a lock. Thought that some of you have done similar jobs
and might suggest some options. If the bolt was round stock I have a
system I do like, but in this case the bolt is 1/2" x 1' and is
mounted
on a backplate that is 3&1/4.

So far the best I have come up with is riveting on top and bottom
pieces just behind the 1/2 x 1 when in the closed position, these two
pieces would allow another piece to slide through them and accept a
paddle lock.

Thanks for any thoughts,
