Larry,
Yep, its on old fort drive. Neighborhood kids play in the earthenworks.
It is also about 1/4 mile from the spot where Desoto spent the first
Christmas in the new world. It was the last ditch to stop the yanks as they
marched on Tallahassee, the capitol of 'Florida. They were pretty well
slaughtered about 12 miles South of here, however at Natural Bridge where
the old men and boys that were left around here shot em up as they tried to
cross the St. Marks River at its headwaters. Story is that the river ran so
red with the Yankee blood that gators from other rivers in the area swam out
in the gulf and up the St Marks to eat the dead who drifted down the river.
Seems a bit far fetched. But, I believe that if the Union troops had
crossed the river down near the coast and marched up the west bank they
would have taken Tallahassee and our neighborhood probably wouldn't have the
old fort for kids to play on.
