I grew up on Staten Island and used to duck hunt in fresh Kills, one of the
best duck hunting areas on the Eastern flyway.
It regrettably,  was later turned into the worlds largest garbage dump.
My information is that the barge loads of WTC rubble, that were transported
to Fresh Kills were first searched for body parts, then the salvageable
steel was sorted for recycling.
The remaining rubble was deposited on the dump.
