Norm, My take on this is you could try scanning the cover.......or
going digital camera. The lighting will be the important thing with
capturing the cover so it isn't glared or to light or dark with a camera at
close length.
You'll probably find the right lighting (difused/indirect) and a
good photo editor program like Irfanview that some of the guys mentioned
they downloaded, or the Microsoft photoeditor will also crop, resize
(pixels), and balance brightness and contrast. Some of these photo editors
have "grey scale" settings to change the picture to black and white from
color.
