Dave,
No, they are truncated so they can be welded to a 1/4" rod. They are really
candle cups of a sort.
Andy,
I do have a Dake press and my son has a 25ton hydrolic press. If I had top
and bottom dies I probably wouldn't have asked for advice.
All,
I decided to go the brute force method and rough them in cold on the half
rounds of the swage block. Tomorrow I will weld the seams and clean them up
on the mandrel hot. Since I knew that I was going to clean them up later I
didn't have to make them too perfect on the swage block and it went pretty
fast (under 5 min. each). The trick seems to be, starting at the small end
on the smallest half round then as I worked my way up the cone move to
progressivly larger sections. And of course always keeping the pien marks
lined up with the axis of the cone.
If it turns out that I need hundreds of these cones instead of a couple
dozen I will have to invest in more tooling.

Bob,
These are true cones, right? 1.5" d at the bottom, top closes completely
to a point?
