Go to your friendly neighborhood used clothing store(s) and look for a
long (probably woman's) leather coat.  One with a cigaret burn or
stain in a prominent place will be pretty cheap.  Unstitch or cut off
the skirt portion and remove any lining.  Stitch or rivet over a flap
at the top of the "skirt" to hold a drawstring.  Insert heavy twine or
cotton clothesline.  Voila: apron.  I dug mine out of the "free box"
in Cambridge, Mass one night during a visit there.  Tastefull green
suede with patch pocket.

If you have any friends who travel to Mexico, ask them to look out for
one.  I have two bib-type aprons that someone brought home from
there. More durable than lady's coat leather. :-)
