Boredom got to me.

I had a cuff sitting around that I just scanned:

You can clearly see the grain of the etched iron, but the coloration is
a bit boring.

I patinated using the nickel ox patina:

What I have found useful is the use of a wrecked scotchbrite pad.  It
"breaks" the formation of the oxides and evens the color out a lot.
Light pressure, going in the direction of the grain breaks down dark
splotches and evens the color nicely, as can be seen.

In this case I obtained a coppery-purple result, so contrary to the
result
on the other bracelet:

etching doesn't dictate color.  Not sure what I did differently, but the
twisted bracelet was sealed with linseed oil.  I suppose I was not
successful in completely removing it... perhaps that was the reason for
the graphite gray result.
