[TheForge] Fwd: Shop tools & layount (3-phase converter)

I have a VFD on my horizontal mill and a rotary for my other
machines. The VFDs work fine especially if you want/need infinite
control of the speed of a machine but they are intended to be
dedicated devices and can only run one motor. Some folks have talked
about setting them up to be switched from machine to machine but
unless you are careful you can fry the VFD in an instant. They do not
take well at all to having the output switched under power and you
can just about guarantee frying the transistors if you do. The other
drawback is that they tend to be the most expensive way to convert
single phase to three phase, although I have been seeing less
expensive surplus VFDs showing up on occasion. Also they are only
available in the single phase to three phase configuration up to 3 HP
if you need to control a larger motor then they require three phase
input.
