I don't recall the speed but Sid Sudemeyer said if a 25# wasn't running 
fast enough it wouldn't  hit hard enough. I was working on the hammer that 
the Northest blacksmiths have at Ashokan, NY which had been set up with a 
jack shaft. When it was eliminated it worked much better
