DUH... I was assuming a round footprint on the tooling, which
is of course not necessarily the case.
One other thing: If you are worried about the 1/2" hole staying
round, which I don't see as a problem with the right material,
you can also relieve the mating durface of the tool where it
sits over the hole such that there is no chance of force being
applied directly over the screw, like so:

The relief need be big a few thousandths deep. Just enough to
life from the die face. I don't see this as being necessary,
though.
