[TheForge] Shop tools & layount (was -- 2004 Resolution, Intro & Advice Needed)

If three phase is readily available, by all means take advantage of it.
Usually, it is very expensive to get 3 phase put in. If that is the case,
don't worry about it until you have a need for it. Then the simplest method
is to build or buy a 3 phase rotary converter.

Thanks to everyone for the excellent info. I've collected & read a lot of
books over the past couple of years (many from recommendations on this
list). But in the end, your candid thoughts on what works & what doesn't is
invaluable. I had not even considered prevailing winds -- big aha!

Just a couple more questions:

1. I was lucky enough to pick up an anvil, leg vice & some tools from a
retired farmer in WV. However, everything is somewhat abused & hasn't been
used in a while. My plan is to clean most of them with a wire wheel to get
the rust off & then protect them with a tool oil. Is that the right
approach? If so, any recommendations on tool oil? Also, how does one go
about getting an anvil resurfaced?

2. Nobody mentioned air tools. That would seem like a cost effective way
to cover some of the finishing tools in particular. If so, what would be a
good, solid size for the compressor? That will probably be "down the road",
but I'd like to go ahead & plan for it.

3. As for power, is there any benefit to having 3-phase? This is way out
of my field of knowledge, but a friend with a fairly large wood working shop
recommended 3-phase in order to have more possibilities in terms of used
industrial equipment.

Ries, your right about Corky Storer's mask (sorry about that). Although I
didn't see the chairs or the column, I've seen pictures of your Fish Bridge
which is amazing
(http://www.salmoncity.net/artists/fishbridge.html<http://www.salmoncity.net
/artists/fishbridge.html>).

Ted, no relatives in Montiville that we're aware of....unless they got to
Montville by way of Wisconsin.

Thanks again to all. I'm sure you'll be hearing from me again as I try to
get my act together.

Bettina
