I consulted the Astronomy discussion group I lurk on and you cannot exceed 
the speed of light at all as far science is concerned. Two objects approaching 
one another at close to the speed of light can give the appearence of this but 
it is not possible for either object to individualy exceed the speed of light. 
It is all dependent on your frame of reference.

As far as the speed of a photon being emitted from either object the combined 
speed of the photon and it's acceleration due to the movement of the source 
cannot exceed the Speed of Light... this is how it was explained to me.
