Our 'bobbies' don't routinely carry firearms, and don't want to (on the
whole).
The recent UK 'ban' on guns was actually a (government knee-jerk?) ban on
legally held hand guns - and little of the gun crime that is on the increase
here is committed with legally held guns anyway!
It's probably mostly down to an increase in gang culture, increased access
to weapons from the darker parts of Eastern Europe, etc etc.
The country was a bit shocked recently when a traffic policeman was killed
in Leeds by a man he'd just arrested in a stolen car - luckily it's still
quite rare. The police (not 'bobbies'!) that came to have a look around
Leeds tha day after were certainly armed!
We have checkpoints in London occasionally manned by armed police - the last
time I was stopped at one was at the height of the IRA campaign that
included the Canary Wharf bombing. It's still unusual enough to make the law
abiding amongst us more than a little nervous.
Later,
Rich.
