I have nothing against gun ownership in the US- And anyway there are
way too many guns here already for anybody to ever take em all away. We
are not going to lose our right to bear arms, nor should we.
But I think it is a self congratulatory myth to think that an armed
citizenry can make any kind of an effect against a modern army. That is
something out of the movies. Modern weapons are breathtakingly
powerful, and the logistics train of an army is usually 9 times the
manpower of the fighting men. No war has been won by indigenous troops
armed only with small arms in probably 200 years, without extensive
monetary and armaments support from an outside government. That
includes the american revolution. If we hadnt been able to buy real
weapons from other european countries, and hadnt had a real army to
begin with, we would still be a british colony today. The french gave us
money, arms, and other support, for cash and for their own reasons.
It is chest puffery to think that a bunch of average americans with
deer rifles would be able to hold off a real army from any country,
even our own. You need massive infrastructure to fight a modern war-
everything from food to ammunition factories, to airports and mobile
tank repair garages. It is not uncommon for a single infantryman to use
600 rounds of ammo a day- how much do you have on your hall closet
shelf?
Having guns is fine, but it isnt going to replace our need for F16's.
