When I go to my local steel supplier and ask for "hot rolled" I get A36.
When I ask for "cold rolled" I get 1018.
You CAN get hot rolled or cold rolled in any type of steel
(1045,1090,etc.). But for the most part hot rolled is A36 and cold
rolled is 1018.
I don't think if you buy 1018 square or round that there will be any
"semi-hardening" done other than the slight surface hardness that might
be caused by the rolling process which is irrelevant if you plan to
forge the stuff.
