With the crappy coal I was using, the real savings was in less time
cleaning clinker out of the fire. I started with a handcranked blower
that automatically idled when I walked away, ut when I went to an
electirc blower, both coal consumption and clinker went up, even with a
rheostat to crank the speed down. I always intended to put a foot
switch on it to shift it from a fixed resistor for a keep alive setting
and the adjustable setting, but built a gas forge first and don't use
coal that much now.
