Unfortunately, background data really is important, both in this book and the
one under way now. Knowledge comes in many forms, and a survey of all
pertinent information is only what honesty requires in most how-to books. Otherwise,
the reader is left with nothing more than a set of directions for constructing
equipment. If the field has "been done to death" already, that is fine. No
one needs another welding survey book (though I'm sure we'll see them). However,
effective gas burning equipment for the crafts constitutes a great new
adventure, so the survey is a critical part of a novice's preparation. We all
qualify as novices on the subject, because it is evolving with bewildering speed.
What's unfortunate about this, is the time research takes. Of course, it's a lot
of fun, but admitting that won't raise my pay any :o)
