[TheForge] Engine Driven Welders

Both my home and shop are powered by solar electricity. I had high hopes of working only in traditrional techniques with oxy fuel welding as a back up. Unfortunatly I find that the need for electical welding ability cannot be ignored. If for no other purpose than shop maintenance & tool manufaturing. The back up generator we have is only 5,000 watts and will run a small 135 mig, but anything I can weld with that I am more than happy to weld with the torch. I was also able to run my Lincoln AC-225 buz box at 125 amps or less with that power source. Again that is the same size range that can be reasonably welded with a torch.

Now to the point. I am faced with the choice of buying a larger generator that will run real welding equipment. Or buying an Engine driven Welder/Generator. I was wondering what the list opinions might be on those options? Also does anyone have experience with the welder/generators. Given the choice I would prefer to weld with either MIG or TIG. Most welder/generators have those options if you buy the right accessories.

Any help is apprecieated.
