Dan,
There's a long chapter, The Ax On America's Frontiers, in the book
Firearms,Traps,and Tools of the Mountain Men.
There are line drawings of a lot of different styles of axes and tomahawks
with some forging instruction thrown in for good measure.
Author is Carl P. Russell, isbn 0-8263-0465-6.
If I remember correctly, I bought it from Norm Larson.
