I use an old cotton glove finger on every roll of GMAW wire I have. What I
do is cut one finger of the glove off and fold it over the wire and place a
clip over it to hold it on.

This keeps the dust and welding residue from building up in the guide before
the drive wheels, and has eliminated alot of contamination in the conduit
also.

I have had in the past, guides so stopped up, that I had to drill them out.
Problem was solved with the wiper.

Dealers sell small felt "cylinders" ( split and clipped) impregnated :~)
with oil that slides on before the drive.
inexpensive , and helps about that much, too.
