[TheForge] superquench questions

Superquench:

5 lbs salt
8 oz Shaklee Basic I
28 t0 32 oz Dawn dishwashing liquid, preferably blue color.
water to make five gallons (US)

Last I looked, you couldn't buy Basic I online, but you could find a
local distributor from an online search.

Remember that superquench is used by getting the mild steel up above a
nonmagnetic, then quenching with rapid motion. If the metal doesn't
scream (no kidding) the quench didn't work. Use it on high carbon steel
only if you want to shatter the steel. A good quality, low-carbon weld
might survive superquenchiing, but I'd be concerned about it opening up
just from the stresses during quenching.

5 gal MIGHT be enough to quench one die (a few pounds) IF it's outside
in the snow and ice! Bite the bullet and make 30 gal of the stuff.
It's not that expensive, and it won't rot. (It will rot out a metal
barrel, though. Try plastic, with some limestone chips on the bottom to
keep hot metal from punching through.)

I think Robb Gunter might have Rockwell tested superquenched stuff.

I bought a set of the dovetail die adaptors for my LG 25 from Sid. I
have some chunks of 2"x3" to make a few sets of dies.

Do any of you use "superquench" on hammer dies?

What is the current recipe?

Is there somewhere online to get the Shaklee stuff?

Has anyone ever Rockwelled after superquenching?

Should I weld the die together before superquenching?

Is a 5 gallon bucket of SQ big enuf to quench hammer dies?

Thanks.

Bob
