Ever heard of "Active Armor"?

Take a couple of sheets of metal, place explosive between them. When a 
missile pushes the outer plate enough to trigger the explosive lets loose 
knocking the outer plate loose. The outer plate flying outwards destroys 
the missile and the inner plate keeps the explosion away from the crew. (Of 
course, that's the plan)
