[TheForge] OT rant

Amen.
There are plenty of places to discuss politics and religion. They're
part of life so they come up here but as Chris pointed out long ago in
this thread, this list as the town square of this little community of
ours probably serves us all better if it doesn't get cluttered by
things only barely related to hot metal. We all believe in freedom
here, I'm sure. But freedom unalloyed by the considerations of the
community is destructive of that community (you're always free not to
do the little things your spouse asks of you--but you do them because
if you didn't sooner or later s/he'd be gone). Chris referred to my
acquiescence to his request as "gracious." Grace is just the
willingness to make an uncoerced choice not to exercise one's freedom
sometimes in the interest of continued relationships. And in the
current climate of garrisoned positions based on sound-bite premises,
policial/religious debate, as you point out, barely rises to the level
of "discussion." The quality of exchange about metal here is *so* much
better.
I did like the mental picture of the 6-foot-tall heavily bearded and
beer-bellied drag queen in pink and black camo, dangly pearl earrings,
and a minnie pearl hat with a picture of che gueverra in the band,
standing over an anvil hammer in hand. The voice has to be Julia
Child's. So much for the fruits of political discussion.
