Old Uncle Bill Gichner was a person very much
responsible for the come back of blacksmithing.
For those of you who met him in later years it is hard to imagine him
as a kindly old "Uncle" that coached many of us. His main influence was
to stress business. He saw too many starving artists who loved what they
were doing but never charged enough for it. He got people to tool up and
get productive. If he saw you needed something it often would appear on
a truck and he would let you pay for it when you could. He had a gruff
exterior but had a heart of gold.
He had a great sense of humor and could tell a good story. He was a
snappy dresser. He could smell a power hammer from 20 miles away on the
interstate. He could get more heavy stuff into a van than anyone.
So for the rest of us , we move one step closer to being old-timers.
Rest in peace Bill, you will not be forgotten.
