There was an interesting article on the front page of the Wall Street
Journal last week. Due to mis management of the deer population (they
called it "malpractice" in the article) there are more deer now than
there were in revolutionary times. My older neighbors here in southeast
Minnesota say that back 50-60-70 years when they were kids seeing a
deer around here was a rare event.
The article talked about how the overpopulation of deer were eating all
the understory in the woods. They eat most of the acorns and the few
oaks that do sprout are eaten then. In 20 years when all the current
trees are dead there will be nothing to take their place. The only ones
it's good for are the body shops who make bazzillions fixing cars that
hit the deer.
Another case of unintended consequences.
Keep grinding up deer. It's a good thing.
